Holiday mini-sessions—finally!

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Okay, to interrupt the chirping cricket soundtrack that’s been looping on my blog lately, I’m happy to finally be rolling out some previews from the holiday mini-sessions. Thanks so much to all the families who are staying flexible about the schedule for what I think is one of the moistest falls we’ve had in a long time. Don’t get me wrong, I love rain—seriously—but it doesn’t always make for great portraits. So glad that we had a streak of sunny days to get these portraits made! There’s still a little time left for you to book yours. I’ve extended the holiday mini-sessions through next weekend, Sunday, November 8. Catch the fall colors while they last!

PA253178This mother and son are my new BFF’s! The fun started the minute we jumped out of our cars until we sped away with silly grins on our faces. Mr. E. has the best sense of humor of any 7 year-old I’ve ever met…

…and I do love a mom who knows just when to turn on “the tickle.”

So glad to have met you both, and thanks for a super-enjoyable, easy, (literally) breezy mini-session!

I don’t think it possible for this family to be any more genuinely happy. At one point, I just had to ask, “Are you guys for real?!” I’m here to tell you the answer is a resounding “Yes!” It was my pleasure to bask in the glow of all this family love, and as luck would have it, on a glowing sunny afternoon. A tribute to you all.

I personally think that happy parents make for happy kids, and this session was no exception. And special thanks to dad for helping to make those smiles shine from behind the camera (just how you did it will be out little secret!).

I think these smiles say it all. Thank you all again for a really wonderful holiday mini-session. It was so very nice to get to know you!

We’re number one!

Friday, October 9th, 2009

“Apple Doo-Doooo! Apple Doo-Doooo!” Roughly translated, that’s “Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you!” as sung daily and loudly by both of my twin sons in preparation for their upcoming Big Two celebration. I’m happy to say that this birthday party photo session for one year-old twin brothers gives me another opportunity to state very plainly that “I love my job!” Seriously, how much more fun can you have than a birthday party?! Take two little fellows who are introduced to their first and very own birthday cakes, add party hats, polka dots and streamers (”party-in-a-box”—a hand-made gift from our very own Cohabitot blogger, Nancy Breslin) and you’ve got the makings of an epic celebration.

It’s true at some point during a first birthday celebration someone has just a little too much cake, and then without any notice someone just lets go and takes their first few steps right in front of the party photographer (YES–I got it, and look at the proud look on his and mom’s faces!). Talk about a party to remember. So glad that all it takes is a nice wipe down from mom and a hug from dad to make it all better in the end. Smiles all around and way too much fun had by all. Very happy birthday wishes to you M. and T.–thanks for letting me share it with you. See you all next week for more photo fun outdoors!

Shhhh…it’s a surprise!

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I *love* to be in on a surprise, and the portraits from this photo session are a gift for a special dad (who I hope is not reading this right now, and if so, please act surprised!). These two little birdies were more than happy to fill me in on all the details so my lips are sealed from here on out. I will say that this got me to thinking about that Brady Bunch episode where the kids sneak out of the house to have a picture taken for an anniversary gift for their mom. Well, several Brady-style hijinx later, that story presented a well-intentioned moral about wearing your glasses, and one of those “it can only happen on television” happy endings, including a thrilled mom.

Okay, some people really don’t like to be surprised, but I sure do (hint, hint). And I hope this is one of the nicest surprises that this dad could imagine—portraits of his son and daughter at this time and place in their family history. I think these new images are ripe for the family photo wall. Thanks so much to mom, C. and C. for helping to make this a perfect gift.

Party city

Sunday, September 20th, 2009

Happy birthday, Mr. Contractor! Let’s hear it for little A. who knew exactly what theme he’d like to celebrate his big fourth year. And, thanks to a very loving mom and dad (who are both obviously really big fans of his incredibly vivid imagination), this was the construction birthday party to beat all! I happen to know that mom, interior designer and hip kid stuff guru Nancy Breslin, master-minded the whole shindig. It’s evident that she has a creative flair and tenacity for organizing a large group of small kids and lots and lots of paint. How she’ll top this one, I don’t know! For some really stylish tips for your kids be sure to check out Nancy’s blog Cohabitot.

Can they paint it? Yes they can, and they surely did. I’m still in awe of the creative insights and abilities of young children. After each guest was equipped with hardhat and apron, the “work” began. No need for instructions, tutorials or “let me show you how”–they just instinctively picked up a brush or roller and got to it. Boys and girls alike dug in and transformed the plain cardboard structures into a rainbow of rowhouses in the backyard. Big fun, beautiful “handyman” cake from Flour Patch Bakery and brilliant birthday wishes all around.

A big shout-out to Barista Kids for sending you this colorful party Postcard from Kidsville!

Our new house on the corner

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

With sunny 3-month and 18-month-old girls, you’d never know that this family had just moved into there new digs and were still in the process of re-organizing their life. Talk about a lovely family! You know the kind that make you feel right at home the minute you step in the door. And what a grand front door indeed–the perfect dramatic background for their little ingénue.

I just love morning light, and there was none better for documenting the special occasion of the christening of their youngest. Baby and big sister looked absolutely stunning in their flowing outfits and mom and dad couldn’t have beamed more brightly. So glad that grandma could make a special visit for the session. My only regret is that I couldn’t quite catch up with Rocky the dog, the grand embassador of the family. Next time I’ll have to bring my running shoes! Thanks so much to you all for a fairytale session. Simply beautiful.

On the day you were born

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

My husband and I met a couple expecting twins in the hospital waiting room on the day our boys were born. From that chance meeting, we’re now two years into a blossoming friendship. We can speculate that our kids will be BFF’s…wouldn’t that be something? The best part is getting together to exchange notes and experience the similarities and differences of our gender-opposite kids.

So what better way to spend an afternoon with friends than on a picnic in Prospect Park, Brooklyn? I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day or a more natural family to photograph. I love the easy-going way they flow together, and the girls make my smile hurt! As a mother of two boys, I’m learning that girls have a decidedly different approach to life, mainly one that doesn’t include throwing everything within reach. But in their defense, my little guys love an adventure and this day in the park was right up their alley.

My memory of living just blocks from the park for 10 years doesn’t do justice to the cinematic scenes we experienced in one afternoon. I was definitely seeing it again for the first time through the wide-open eyes of my sons. Ironically, our new friends moved to our old neighborhood a few years after we’d left. Standing there in the heady swirl of colors, smells, sounds and faces, I thought to myself, “Why did we ever leave?”

Well, for fear of this post turning into a “I [heart] Brooklyn!” festival, I’ll just say that there is definitely something very special about that particular latitude and longitude. And a big part of it is our friends and their sweet and hysterical twin daughters. They know just how much we appreciate their friendship and the very unique bond we share. This gives us every excuse to visit our old stomping grounds, and it has me looking forward to exchanging notes on all the many milestones to come.

The fabulous Miss E.

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Wow! Isn’t that the first word that came to your mind, too? I can’t tell you how much fun I had at this session–the breadth and depth of creative powers this supergirl possesses just boggles my mind, and at the ripe old age of six. Okay, I came up with the terrific idea to lie on the ground shooting upward while she was hula-hooping (which she can do for 200 revolutions!!!), but after that, it was all her–I was just trying to keep up!

And for all the fantastic frames I’m sharing here, I have that many more waiting in the wings. But today’s niggling question is: how many other glorious childhood moments must I have missed? I’m pretty sure I blinked at some point. Aye, there’s the rub. Childhood is fleeting even while you’re smack dab in the moment with kids. Sure, there are some moments you don’t want to remember like the time when ________ (you fill in the blank). But still there’s a good chance you won’t remember most of it, and those now-you-see-it, now-you-don’ts will be lost. It’s that feeling that gets you running (and tripping over furniture) to find your camera before the moment’s gone and the kids are moving out of the house.

I guess that’s why we hold snapshots and video, cards and keepsakes so dear. And I guess that’s why I love to photograph children. My challenge is to capture those fleeting moments, to make a tangible record of all that creative spirit. Well, Miss E., I know I only captured a fraction of who you are and what you’re all about at this moment in time, but I sure hope you smile when you see these photos. I know I do : )

“We have a runner…(maybe two)”

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Aaahh–thank goodness for what I like to call “the photographic edge.” That often misunderstood and neglected edge of frame. Actually, it’s one of my favorite parts of a photo–what’s just out of view, what’s hidden just out of sight, that blank your brain rushes to fill in. Oh, the stories the edge of a photo can tell. In this case, ladies and gentlemen, we have the most exciting part of my job–little guys in perpetual motion. What a challenge! What an adrenaline rush! What a lot of fun!!!

And I love a dad with a great sense of humor (and a mom with nerves of steel–just look at that sparkling smile). As this family portrait session was settling into the starting block and all members were assembling on the blanket, dad said to me with a little grin, “Are you ready? Okay, on your mark…get set…GO!” And he wasn’t kidding.

This first image was the third frame I snapped. Well, I’m pretty well-versed in twin boy toddler energy, having a set of my own at home. But it’s always nice to see that individual spirit rush out in all directions. This amazing family knows they hold a very special place in my heart, and I hope to keep documenting them from here to eternity. You guys are absolutely the best!

Postcards from Kidsville: castles and sailboats and crabs…oh, my!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

It was a wonderful combination of heavenly smells, sweet all-natural dough and luscious whipped icing at yesterday’s 2:00pm children’s cookie decorating class at Le Baker’s Dozen in Upper Montclair. I so wanted to be sitting at the table sprinkling shiny non pareil decorations (a young cookie decorator kindly reminded me of the name) along a blue sailboat cookie’s mast.

The girls in the class (hey boys, you don’t know what you missed!) were hands-down the most creative and focused cookie decorators I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. I envied them their pirate booty of cookies that would last me, well heck, at least an hour. I kick myself for not taking bakery owner Thérèse’s offer to pack a cookie for the road. What on earth was I thinking?!? Well, that just gives me the perfect excuse to go back again…and again…and again. Yum!

Sweet thanks to Barista Kids for letting you lick the frosting from this Postcard from Kidsville!

Sunny morning

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Family is a beautiful thing. I had the great pleasure of photographing this family on a sunny Saturday morning. Talk about a lot of fun–this was a whirlwind session with a little bit of everything! The family was celebrating the baptism of their youngest member, and took the opportunity to turn it into a full blown family portrait session.

Alas, I finally ran out of memory cards, but I could have stayed all day. Hope you all had fun at the zoo!
